About this project
The Milton Hershey School contacted B.R. Howard & Associates to provide an assessment and treatment of the Spartan Youth sculpture displayed near the main entrance of the school. The bright bronze substrate was exposed over the majority of the figure caused by extensive abrasive cleanings, however remnants of the original dark patina were still evident within recessed areas.
What we did
Before cleaning, the sculpture was thoroughly examined and photo documented. After sample patinas were provided in an effort to closely match the original patina remnants, the bronze was heated and completely chemically re-patinated. A specialized mixture of waxes were blended and then applied while using torches to heat the metal surface. Two cold wax applications were then given and the sculpture was buffed with lint free cotton rags. A full treatment report was provided and included all images of the work performed.
