About this project
B.R. Howard was contracted to provide conservation services to the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center's M4A3 Sherman Tank. The tank is exhibited outdoors on the center’s 1 mile long heritage walking trail.
Condition
Due to weathering in an unsheltered outdoor exhibit space, the tank was in unstable condition. Active corrosion was found on various areas of the tank, both on painted and unpainted surfaces. The tank had been stripped and repainted in the late 1990’s or early 2000’s.
what we did
The tank was washed with a cleaning solution before removing areas of actively flaking or lifting paint and treating corroded areas. An industrial marine grade paint was used to cover the tank and unpainted surfaces were covered with a protective wax coating. All markings existing prior to treatment were replicated using stencils matching to original markings in size and font.
