About this project
B.R. Howard was contracted by a private client to conserve a tall case clock that was in poor condition and had been in storage for a long period of time. The client's goal was to have the clock completely conserved and elements restored so that it could be displayed.
What we did
All surfaces were thoroughly cleaned of accumulated dirt and grime. Numerous loose and missing veneers and carved decoration were re-adhered and reproduced. A section of the base was missing and had to be cut, inserted and finished to match the original surfaces. Missing hinges had to be fabricated. The clock works were cleaned and made operable. Darkened varnish from the painted dials were removed using a mixture of aqueous and solvent based cleaning systems after testing was performed and flaking paint was consolidated. All losses were filled and in-painted to match the original surfaces.
