About this project
The State Museum of Pennsylvania contracted B.R. Howard to conserve their decorative aluminum and bronze gates inside the second story entrance.
What we did
The gates are fabricated from sections of square aluminum tubing, screwed and bolted together. Each cast bronze figure is bolted to one of five horizontal rails, held between the vertical stiles. The fasteners, used to secure the bronze castings, are not visible and can only be accessed after complete disassembly of the sections.
The gates were transported to our facility before they were disassembled. Some fractured bronze figures were repaired and reinstalled. The green patina was applied to local worn areas due to excessive handling from the public. The aluminum surfaces were cleaned and a protective coating was applied to the bronze elements. The gates were reassembled and then reinstalled at the museum.
